Distinguished urban planner and developer and public servant, he has given generously and effectively of himself to improve the quality of life for people and understanding among peoples of the world. As an innovative business leader, he has demonstrated the desirability both from a private and public viewpoint of taking into account the total effect on the environment of the use of land. He has continued to strive for improvements in the way land is used by people to provide and maintain an attractive environment. As a public servant, he has given creative leadership to many national and international organizations, conspicuous among these being service as the United States delegate to the General Assembly of the United Nations, as Executive Director of the White House Conference on International Cooperation, and as the Chairman of the National Commission on Urban Development. In recognition of his farsighted business leadership and his significant public services Southern Methodist University is proud to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
